When a man looks at a woman

I’m still making my way through Vollman’s Poor People, after all these years it’s still on my currently reading pile. It’s because this book often makes me stop, despite being in that state of heightened reading hunger. The subject matter demands the pauses. Vollman says something, drops a line that requires mulling and working through. A quick but passive read would not do this book justice. If the title says anything, it’s that this is no entertainment. Also, I have no interest in poverty porn. I bought the book with a naive hunger to understand poverty. Naive because I expected a book to hold the answers. It does not. But having answers and some understanding turns out to be two different things.
